Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, ...  'pulling teeth' is often either part of orthodontic work or if tooth decay has become too intense as well as a variety of other reasons. A surgical procedure may be required to gain access to those teeth to be extracted.  In many cases an incision will be made in the gum tissue and bone may be removed to gain access.
